WT Plumbing Icon Man

We take on all aspects of plumbing and heating big or small.

A boiler is an extremely complex piece of equipment. Yet it rarely needs to be repaired. One of the great things about a boiler is that it tends to be highly durable and requires little maintenance. You may be surprised to find out there is a problem with your boiler, but it will eventually happen.

When your boiler doesn't work the way it should, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there is a major problem and maybe a simple repair. Repairing your boiler, whether you need a new part or some TLC, could mean that you still enjoy your boiler for years to come.

Often, repairing your boiler is the simplest and most cost-effective way to restore your heating. In most cases, if you have a newer model boiler that's reliable, it's unlikely to need replacing. In some cases, you should replace an old or out of warranty boiler, or if the boiler is unsafe.

Whatever the case, you can consult with our professional engineers, who can advise you of the best course to take and help you weigh up the options.

It is good to know what to expect and realize that routine preventative maintenance may be a good option for your home. There are many different parts to a boiler and it may be difficult to determine which one is malfunctioning when your boiler is acting up.

If, however, your boiler or heating system develops any of these symptoms, you should consult W.T Plumbing as soon as possible:

No Heat

This is a sign that something is wrong with the functioning of your boiler. It is near impossible for us to know what we will find when we are called about this particular issue. The problem may be with ignition, but there are many other possibilities to think about. It could be a safety switch that is interrupting the boiler's operation, a pump failing, or the thermostat that needs to be replaced. Another cause could be loss of pressure and when this happens it won’t be able to produce heat effectively. The pressure gauge on your boiler can help you determine this.

You shouldn’t need to be concerned about diagnosing the problem yourself. Call in our qualified heating technicians at W.T Plumbing for your repairs.

Leaking and Dripping

Leaking boilers are another common boiler repair we receive as an emergency call. If the leak originates directly from the boiler tank, you've got a major problem on your hands. There is a good chance that the boiler is corroding through and requires replacement. A leak, however, can come from a pressure relief valve or a pump, both of which can be fixed. Sometimes, we even discover that a supposed leak was simply condensation.

Kettling

Kettling is a notorious problem among hot water boilers. In case you don't recognize the term, you may recognize the sound: a loud bang or rumble coming from your heating unit. Call W.T Plumbing as soon as possible if this happens to your heater, as it might grow into a much larger problem than it is now.

Water supply disruptions are caused by excess minerals. Due to our area, hard water causes mineral deposits in the tank to alter the pressure levels over time. Kettler boilers may be more prone to leaks or dangerous levels that put your home at risk.

The Pilot Light Goes Out

The pilot light is responsible for the lighting of gas and electricity. When it goes out, your boiler will not function properly. Pilot lights aren't what they used to be. To maintain heat throughout the day and night, the pilot light had to be continuously lit in the past.

Some boilers still use this method, but others use electronic ignition to heat water only when required. Our heating technician will need to diagnose problems with your pilot and ignition system if you can't start the pilot on your own.

Book an Evaluation

Here are a few things to consider before you decide to book an evaluation from W.T Plumbing:

  • Are all thermostats turned on?
  • Do you have sufficient credit on your prepaid gas meter if you are using one?
  • Is the electricity supply to the system switched on?
  • Does the clock show the right time?
  • Are the thermostatic valves at the settings you require?
  • Have you tried to reset the boiler according to the instructions on the boiler?
  • Have you checked gas appliances such as cookers and gas fires to make sure you have a flow of gas in your home?
